Account Fees Are the No. 1 Reason People Switch Banks. Here’s How To Avoid Them

New or increased fees are the number one reason people would leave their bank, a 2026 MoneyRate survey found, with nearly half of respondents (47.7%) citing bank charges as the main justification for switching institutions. Only 10.6% said non-competitive rates would make them walk away.

Monthly maintenance fees have reached a record average of $13.51, according to the report. The charge for using an out-of-network ATM is now $4.55. That figure jumps to $4.88 for larger banks with at least $5 billion in total customer deposits.

If you’re fed up with bank fees, here are some simple strategies to avoid the most common.
