BYD electric cars and plug-in hybrids
BYD electric cars
BYD’s biggest offering in the UK is electric cars, and most models use LFP (lithium iron phosphate ) batteries.
They have a lower energy density than NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) or NCA (nickel cobalt aluminum) batteries (found in most other EVs until recently, since LFP is gaining in popularity), but they can be both safer and longer lasting.
BYD uses its so-called Blade Battery technology, which has been tested to the extreme against strength, damage and longevity.
BYD PHEVs
BYD calls its PHEVs DM-i, which means Dual Mode-intelligent.
It’s a hint to the fact that they can run on two different power sources for a long period of time thanks to big batteries – up to 78 miles on electric power alone in the case of the SEAL U DM-i.
It, too, uses the LFP-type Blade Battery for all the benefits mentioned above.
What’s the best BYD model?
Budget-friendly option – Our pick would be the BYD DOLPHIN SURF Boost. It’s the mid-range version of BYD’s smallest electric car, which means it has the bigger battery option for up to 200 miles of range, a 10.1-inch rotating touchscreen and automatic wipers.
Luxurious trim – If you fancy yourself a premium-feeling EV, consider the BYD SEALION 7 Excellence AWD, which has supremely soft Nappa leather seats, a head-up display, 360-degree cameras and a panoramic sunroof.
Performance variant – BYD’s fastest car is the BYD SEAL Excellence, with 530hp on tap and a clever four-wheel drive system. It’s good for 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, but being a top-spec model, you also get vehicle-to-load for charging via a three-pin socket.
Efficient PHEV version – The efficiency award has to go to the BYD SEAL U DM-i Comfort, with its 26.6kWh battery. Claimed efficiency is 50.5mpg, but the reality is that you’ll be able to do most of your driving on cheaper electricity thanks to the impressive 78-mile range (or 105 miles around town, so BYD says).
