The Economy and Agriculture Authority of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria issued a statement today, read by the Co-Chairs of the Authority, Mohammed Shawqi and Leila Mohammed, which stated:
“In light of the harsh climatic conditions the region has experienced this year, marked by severe drought and a significant decrease in rainfall levels below the annual average, the agricultural sector was directly affected, leading to a sharp decline in production and heavy losses for farmers.
Reaffirming the economic importance of the agricultural sector, which is one of the main pillars of the economy and a fundamental driver of food security, a series of exceptional measures have been taken to support farmers and mitigate the resulting impacts. The wheat purchase price for this season has been set in accordance with the production and economic conditions the sector has gone through. The price has been set at $420 per ton of wheat, which includes direct support of $70 for each ton delivered. This step aims to enhance farmers’ ability to continue and maintain production.
The Autonomous Administration has also taken a series of other supportive measures, including:
– Supporting the cultivation of summer vegetables, fruit trees, and olives by providing diesel fuel at a subsidized price.
– Supporting cotton cultivation with diesel fuel based on a dedicated plan.
– Distributing wheat seeds for the next season at half the price to farmers who incurred losses this year, especially those with rain-fed lands.
– Providing natural fertilizer at half price for farmers.
– Introducing a new mechanism to regulate the supply of diesel to agricultural projects to reduce waste and meet the legitimate needs of farmers.
– Developing the Agricultural Research Center, with a focus on improving seed varieties and creating new types that are compatible with the region’s climatic and soil conditions.
We, at the Economy and Agriculture Authority and the Economic Council, reaffirm our continued commitment to supporting this vital sector. We are working on future plans that focus on developing a locally oriented production approach to build a sustainable domestic agricultural output capable of meeting local needs, achieving food security, and improving the standard of living for the population.”
