Toyota Hybrids Ranked By Gas Mileage: Non-SUV Edition

Toyota Hybrids Ranked By Gas Mileage: Non-SUV Edition

If there are two things Toyota is known for, they’re bulletproof reliability and hybrid powertrains. With its tentative approach to fully-electric Toyota models, the brand has been able to improve its hybrid engines to a point where most people wouldn’t even consider a car without any electrical assistance in 2026. Now that most people also buy SUVs, it means that other Toyota models have been sidelined in favor of cars like the RAV4, but they’re just as efficient and comfortable as their taller counterparts.

We list all the non-SUV hybrid models for efficiency here, ranking these Toyota HEVs from least to most efficient. All information is correct at the time of writing.

Its large proportions allow a big fuel tank, giving it an EPA-estimated range of 708 miles. Also, what it loses in efficiency, it makes up with in capability, with a maximum towing capacity of over 11,000 lbs and a payload weight of over 1,500 lbs. You don’t buy the hybrid Tundra for mileage; you buy it for its abilities.

Minivans are back? Well, that’s at least what we’re hoping for. The Toyota Sienna uses a hybrid four-cylinder to make 245 horsepower, but we’re more fans of the 648-mile range and 36 mpg combined, which is the same in the city and the highway. The Sienna’s efficiency isn’t the only thing that makes it great for a road trip, either, as you can specify a fridge in the back, a vacuum cleaner, or even 1500W-capable power outlets to make off-grid adventures easier.

“On a fundamental level, the Toyota Sienna offers the best fuel economy by quite some margin and is excellently thought out, which makes it a solid default recommendation when matched with Toyota’s reputation for reliability and longevity. Its smoothness comes from a comfortable ride from the suspension, excellent visibility, light and easy steering, and it’s an easy vehicle to drive.”

The Toyota Crown is all about smoothness and making sure you feel soothed by the powertrain, interior features, and overall quality. The 2.5L hybrid four-cylinder gets 42 mpg combined, and that’s good for an almost-600 mile range, meaning long trips aren’t super stressful. The CVT also helps with that, as there are no interruptions in torque to make your passengers jolt. A CVT can get up to the optimum rpm much quicker.

“Engine revs are delivered more sparingly since the Crown has gobs of torque to get by without straining itself. This powertrain is so smooth, it’s good enough for Lexus to use. The Crown is nearly silent during normal driving, and a quick overtake is no longer accompanied by a groaning engine hitting peak RPM thanks to an eCVT.”

It’s no surprise that the Toyota Corolla is one of the most sold cars in history, as it can help save you money in the long term, and you don’t have to be worried about the old “cheap equals unreliable” tax. Its 50 mpg comes from a tiny 1.8L unit, which only makes 138 horsepower. Luckily, you aren’t paying much for this car, as it starts at just under $25k, meaning Toyota hybrid cars are easily accessible at lower budgets. The base trim might be too bare for some, but it’s reliable transport that’ll get you from A to B.

What used to be a sensible family sedan is now quite a cool piece of Toyota design. The Camry’s sleek lines are met with modern C-shaped lights all around, and with 51 mpg to play with, you might forget to fill up. Because of the electric motors, the Toyota Camry is actually more efficient inside the city than on the highway, which means that if you want a larger commuter car, the Camry is worth a look. There’s no denying this isn’t a sporty car, but it delivers smooth driving characteristics that can be decently fun.

“The new hybrid regeneration system is one of the smoothest we’ve come across, meaning the brakes don’t feel like they’re moving between mechanical brakes and using the electric motors to slow down. They feel natural to the point that if you’ve never used regenerative braking before, you won’t notice it working to replenish the battery.”

We obviously know there’s a massive 127 MPGe figure, but we’re ranking this on pure mpg, so the plug-in hybrid version of the Toyota Prius comes in second on our list. The shape is built for aerodynamics, the engine is tuned to make a 600-mile range easy, and for this generation, Toyota has been heavyhanded with the makeover. It’s a car you don’t have to make excuses for anymore and, if you can get over the slightly odd interior and driver’s display position, this is one of the Toyota hybrid vehicles we’d seriously consider. Furhtermore, 45 miles of electric range is also stellar for a commute, meaning you won’t have to touch the engine too often.

The most efficient of all Toyota hybrid models is the regular Toyota Prius, which grants you a combined efficiency rating of 57 mpg and a range of easily over 600 miles. You won’t have to mess around with charging this car either, as it charges itself while you drive and brake. The Prius was the car that convinced us electric power working with the internal combustion engine is a great solution. The latest generation shows that it can be done while looking good. For $28,550, you can’t go wrong.

“Because the chassis is tight, maintains a low center of gravity, and the steering is light and responsive, the Prius can be driven with an eye on maintaining momentum through corners. We managed to return 36.8 mpg recklessly abandoning fuel economy. That’s still much better than most sedaEPAns and compact crossovers with just a gas engine, especially when much of the drive was uphill.”
