The addition of two electric motors has transformed this rugged vehicle into a fuel-saver, as it boasts up to 40% better fuel economy than the standard Forester.
Aside from the mtoors, this car is powered by a 2.5L boxer engine, which means the pistons move away from each other. This gives the car a lower center of gravity – helpful when you’re tackling things off the beaten path. Subaru’s engineers also changed the combustion cycle of the hybrid version of this car, which is how the car actually mixes and combusts fuel and air. They’ve used an Atkinson-Miller cycle here, which keeps the intake valve open during combustion and increases fuel efficiency.

This car’s 194 horsepower output – only 14 horses extra over the standard Forester – shows that Subaru wasn’t going for power or agility, as the whole hybrid drivetrain is built around squeezing all the energy from the smallest amount of gas while still retaining off-road prowess.

As standard on the cheapest trim, named ‘Premium’, you get an 11.6-inch screen, a powered trunk, a panoramic moonroof and a powered driver’s seat. That’s a lot already for the base trim, and the top ‘Touring’ package gets leather-trimmed upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a 360 monitor and 19-inch wheels among other comforts. All of these trims use the same hybrid powertrain, so it’s all in the details about which one is right for you.
The Subaru is also full of space, although there’s slightly more cargo space in America’s favorite road-focused SUV, the Toyota RAV4. It’s quite a bit cheaper than the Subaru too, but be wary of the total range, which takes a massive dive in this car.
