It might surprise you to find out that the 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid has the best fuel efficiency out of the off-road-focused SUVs. Why Is The Subaru Forester Hybrid The Most Fuel-Efficient 4X4?
EPA Fuel Efficiency Ratings:
- City: 35 mpg
- Highway: 34 mpg
- Combined: 35 mpg
- Total Range: 581 miles
There are a few reasons why the latest Forester hybrid is one of the best off-roaders for fuel efficiency. Subaru’s outdoorsy SUV wasn’t the most efficient in its class before the arrival of the hybrid powertrain, as the high ground clearance and two-box design wasn’t a combination made for aerodynamics. The addition of two electric motors has transformed this rugged vehicle into a fuel-saver, as it boasts up to 40% better fuel economy than the standard Forester.
Aside from the mtoors, this car is powered by a 2.5L boxer engine, which means the pistons move away from each other. This gives the car a lower center of gravity – helpful when you’re tackling things off the beaten path. Subaru’s engineers also changed the combustion cycle of the hybrid version of this car, which is how the car actually mixes and combusts fuel and air. They’ve used an Atkinson-Miller cycle here, which keeps the intake valve open during combustion and increases fuel efficiency.

Which generation of Subaru Forester will come out on top?
You’ll also find a CVT transmission on board, which hampers the driving dynamics slightly but increases gas mileage. It keeps the car at the optimum number of revs at any point using a small pulley. This car’s 194 horsepower output – only 14 horses extra over the standard Forester – shows that Subaru wasn’t going for power or agility, as the whole hybrid drivetrain is built around squeezing all the energy from the smallest amount of gas while still retaining off-road prowess.
How Does The Subaru Forester Hybrid Perform Off-Road?
Still A Segment Standout
If you know Subaru, you’ll know that its car designs come with off-roading in mind. The constant Subaru 4WD is standard across all Subaru Forester models, and provides extra grip on uneven roads. The automaker has had experience in rallying and trail racing, so this success directly translates to better performance in its consumer cars.
You also get a generous amount of ground clearance at 8.7 inches, although there’s no ‘Wilderness’ trim to raise this like there is with the gas-only version, which is a slight shame. This is still more than a lot of family off-road vehicles. Paired with rugged plastic trim around the edges, you shouldn’t need to worry about getting this car dirty.

2026 Subaru Forester Goes Wild And Electrified, But Not At The Same Time
The new Forester gets more rugged capability and an electrified powertrain, but only as separate models.
Alongside the physical attributes of a rugged SUV with good gas mileage, there’s plenty of tech to keep you going too. The Forester features X-mode, which is Subaru’s low-grip setting that prioritizes traction in tricky conditions without much input from the driver. This is also paired with Hill Descent Control, which moderates speed when on a steep decline without over-relying on the brakes. X-Mode will eat at some of this car’s efficiency though, so it’s best to use it when you really need it.

In terms of outdoorsy cars with good gas mileage, the Subaru Forester Hybrid is a great choice for a family cruiser. The extra efficiency from the hybrid motor means fewer trips to the gas station, while the interior is truly dog and child-friendly. It’s easy to use, comfortable and built to last like many of Subaru’s models. There are four trim options to choose from, and they’re all well-equipped.

The Subaru Hybrid SUVs Coming For Toyota And Honda In 2025
Subaru finally looks to plug the gaping hole in its lineup with a pair of hybrid crossover SUVs.
As standard on the cheapest trim, named ‘Premium’, you get an 11.6-inch screen, a powered trunk, a panoramic moonroof and a powered driver’s seat. That’s a lot already for the base trim, and the top ‘Touring’ package gets leather-trimmed upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a 360 monitor and 19-inch wheels among other comforts. All of these trims use the same hybrid powertrain, so it’s all in the details about which one is right for you.
The Subaru is also full of space, although there’s slightly more cargo space in America’s favorite road-focused SUV, the Toyota RAV4. Subaru gives passengers more space in the Forester when compared to the Toyota, although both have ample space for all passengers. Just know that while there’s a similar amount of space when the seats are folded, you’ll be able to carry less in the Subaru. Check out the dimensions below.

Pricing: What The Best MPG Off-Road SUV Costs In 2025
There are four levels to choose from when buying a 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid. From the cheapest to most expensive, these are the trim options:
- Premium Trim: $36,595
- Sport Trim: $39,595
- Limited Trim: $41,010
- Touring Trim: $43,295
As you can see, they’re not too far apart and demand a premium over the gas-only Forester, which starts at just under $30,000. The Touring Hybrid is the most expensive Forester trim outright. Before you pull the trigger on one of these cars, though, make sure to check out the 2026 model, which has already been announced. It’ll come with a refreshed design and more tech.
Most Efficient Off-Road SUVs: Honorable Mentions
Fuel-efficient adventure vehicles are rising as they get into the hands of more people and many customers choose to use them daily. If a Subaru Forester isn’t for you, you might want to consider some of these options.
Ford Bronco Sport
EPA Fuel Efficiency Ratings:
- City: 25 mpg
- Highway: 30 mpg
- Combined: 27 mpg
- Total Range: 432 miles
Want nostalgic design with proper off-road prowess? The Bronco Sport might be your best bet. This car uses a 1.5L inline-three to return great gas mileage, although there’s no hybrid option to match the Subie. We liked it in our review and the recent updates to this model give it even more capability with a bigger steel underbody protection and modular bumpers. This is a solid choice and gives the Forester a good run for its money, even though it’s a bit smaller inside.

Jeep Compass
EPA Fuel Efficiency Ratings:
- City: 24 mpg
- Highway: 32 mpg
- Combined: 27 mpg
- Total Range: 364 miles
Oh, you thought we’d do a list of off-road SUVs and not include a Jeep? Think again. The Jeep Compass might not be as trail-centric as the Wrangler, but it returns great mileage and has enough oomph from its turbo four-cylinder AWD powertrain to keep you going. It’s quite a bit cheaper than the Subaru too, but be wary of the total range, which takes a massive dive in this car. This is one of the best SUVs with good gas mileage, but you might want to wait for the huge 2026 refresh before buying this car too.
